IFBB Pro Spotlight – Mr Olympia 2012 Phil Heath

Mr Olympia Phil Heath

Nicknamed The Gift”, Phil Heath is an IFBB professional bodybuilder receiving the Mr Olympia title in 2011 and 2012.

Prior to bodybuilding, Phil participated on the University of Denver (Div.1-A) Men’s Basketball team (1998-2002) as a point/shooting guard for the Pioneers. mr olympia heath

The experience on the court taught him many key lessons such as having a hard work ethic, self-discipline, respect for others, humility and accountability.

Although his collegiate career wasn’t as successful as his high school career, Phil knew he could be successful due to the many lessons he learned as an athlete.

After his basketball career, Heath continued to train, but now with new guys who in fact were into bodybuilding.

Heath never thought of himself as a bodybuilder, but he did have a muscular physique for a basketball player so he decided to dive into bodybuilding. He changed his workout routines from basketball prep, to hardcore bodybuilding training.

With his friends being so competitive, Phil immediately put his hard work ethic and discipline to work. He loved the feeling of the muscle pumps he would get during a hard workout and his friends would push him to new limits.  Heath loved the camaraderie in the gym and it reminded him of the rapport he had with his basketball teammates.

Heath also changed his eating habits, from eating only 3 times, to now 6 to 7 times per day. The sport of bodybuilding was in his blood now and he began attending many bodybuilding events and watching bodybuilding DVDs on television.

Heath’s first contest prep was for the NPC Northern CO. in 2003. He purchased a digital camera and took his own pre-contest photographs so he could critique his physique and make adjustments in training according to shape and proportion.

Taking pictures kept Heath motivated into being a better bodybuilder every day. Starting out at 185lbs, Heath grew to a muscle bound 215lb machine with 6% bodyfat!

He competed at the ‘Northern’ as a 192lb light-heavyweight and won his classes, including the overall men’s title. After that huge win, he was hooked and began training harder and eating smarter.

Eight weeks later Heath competed at the NPC Colorado State show again as a light-heavy, weighing 196 lbs. He competed against many strong competitors and was honored with straight 1st’s.

Heath took his training to the next level by enlisting into a hardcore gym. He began to grow throughout the later part of ’03 having his eyes set on the NPC Junior Nationals, but failed to enter before the deadline.

He entered the NPC Colorado State show and took the Mr. Colorado title, competing as a 200lb heavyweight. Heath continued to train and that following year he entered the NPC Junior Nationals and took the overall title.

On June 20th, Heath signed with Weider Health and Fitness, which he attributes to IFBB Pro and former Mr Olympia Jay Cutler and Peter McGough.

Heath later received his pro-card by winning the USA’s, weighing in at 215 lbs and taking overall honors.

Now, as an IFBB pro and 2011 MR. OLYMPIA and 2012 MR. Olympia title winner, Heath intends to represent the sport of bodybuilding in a way that many people can relate to and in a way that mainstream society will respect.
